Email Usage Restrictions
In order to counter the increasing level of junk email we have
taken additional steps to secure our mail server from being
hi-jacked either directly or indirectly from a customer with a
open relay mail server.
These restrictions are as follows:
Users may send up to 20 emails in a 10 minute period. Should this
level be exceeded then email is held temporarily until the threshold
level is reduced. Users may send up to 80 outgoing emails in a 30
minute period, should this second threshold be exceeded mail is
permanently held.
In most situations these restrictions shouldn't affect most users
as they will either be using their corporate mail server to send
outgoing email or they will use the SMTP mail server of the company
who provides their Internet connection.
Definitions:
Open relay
A mail server which has been configured to allow unauthorised
users (spammers) to send out unlimited quantities of email.
For further information see
http://www.ordb.org/faq/.
Our terms and condition forbid a mail server which is open
relay to send mail through our mail server.
FAQ
I use web mail - how does this affect me?
The restrictions still apply. However, unless you are copying
a long list of recipients you shouldn't have too many problems.
I need to send more email than the restrictions
allow!
If you are a dial up or broadband user you should in any case
be using the outgoing SMTP mail server of your Internet
provider. Some users may have mail.wiss.co.uk or
mail.yourdomain configured as the outgoing SMTP servers
(this can be checked this in Outlook under Tools -> Accounts ->
Mail and select the appropriate mail account, look under the tab
'Servers' for the outgoing SMTP mail server setting).
In such instances you are advised to change this to the SMTP
mail server of your Internet connection provider.
I have a corporate SMTP feed and I'm forwarding
traffic via WiSS' mail server - what should I do?
Remove any smart host configuration that forwards mail to our
mail server for delivery.
Why don't you handle outgoing mail as a general
rule?
Authentication. To operate a secure mail server, one that is
not an open relay, we have to authenticate all users before they
can send email. This is commonly done by authenticating the
senders IP address against a list of approved senders.
IP authentication is best handled by your connection provider
they should allow you to send email through their SMTP mail
server.
