SSL - Secure Server
Certificate
What is SSL?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layers [jargon])
enables your web site to serve secure pages often used in e-commerce
site to accept credit card payment information but can be used for a
multitude of purposes where security is of prime importance.
How does it work?
In simple terms a secure server certificate
encrypts the flow of information between a users computer and the
web site. Unauthorised interception of this traffic would have
involve breaking the 'code' before the information could be made
meaningful. Due to the extreme complexity of the encryption this is
an almost impossible task.
All the required encryption/decryption is
under taken by the server hosting the secure web site and therefore
no additional technical knowledge is required to process web pages
that are secured.
As SSL only encrypts traffic between the web
site and the site visitors computer the web developer will need to
consider using additional encryption methods to either store
collected information on the web site or email to a third party,
secure server certificates do not have the potential to perform
these tasks.
Who issues the certificate?
WiSS is a approved reseller of Thawte
certificates.
How do I get a secure server
certificate?
In order to apply for a secure server
certificate you will first need to prove either your personal
identity or that of your organisation to Thawte. SSL security is a
trust issue, for web site visitors to have faith in the validity of
your web site you must be able to prove your trustworthiness.
You will need some or all of the following
information:
- Proof of Company Name Registration
- Proof of Domain Name Ownership
- Proof of Telephone Number
The checks include:
- Proof of company registration using
approved online databases. If unable locate via approved
online sources proof of right documentation will be required.
- WHOIS registration to verify whether the
domain registrant matches the company name in the certificate
registration. If the domain is registered to another organization
other than the organization enrolling for the certificate, a
DRL/DAL (Domain Release/Authorization Letter) will be sent to the
corporate and technical contact. The DRL/DAL needs to be signed by
the domain registrant.
- Verify the telephone number of the
corporate contact through a third party. If it is not possible to
locate a third party listing a request that a telephone bill in
the enrolling company's name or a notarised form letter be
provided. The letter template can be obtained by contacting
customer support or your reseller account manager.
What is the cost?
A secure server certificate costs £125+VAT
for each year, usually renewable on an annual basis.
